’39 Clues’ is a series of novels compiled by various authors. The books are within the Young Adult / Action genres and have proven to be immensely popular with children, teens and even adults alike. Being primarily angled towarss children, these books are a blend of both entertainment, adventure and educcation. The series ’39 Clues’ has the main characters of Dan and Amy Cahill. The two siblings are mainstays throughout the series, spanning over a dozen books and boasting an array of authors for each book – every book has a different author. The impressive list of writers for this series includes Peter Lerangis and Rick Riordan.
The ’39 Clues’ books also have 5 spin off series – Cahills vs Vespers, Rapid Fire, The Cahill Files, Unstoppable and Doublecross. Again, these stories all have interchanging authors that each add their own spin on the action adventure storytelling, whilst ensuring the style of the novels is kept consistent. The authors for this series are all seasoned and known writers, so this adds to the reasons as to why each book flows to well into the other seamlessly. They use their individual inspirations from their various walks of life and harness it into producing a grand, timeless piece of literature.
The series was released to critical approval with (mostly) positive reviews. This has led to much excitement over each new novel within the series and the time leading up to the release of each new chapter has been filled with anticipation from fans.
The very first book in this popular series is called The Maze of Bones’ and was published in 2008. This book introduces us to Amy and Dan Cahill. Amy is the elder of the two siblings, and is introduced as being very knowledgeable. Their parents were killed in a fire when they were younger, so effectively the young pair are orphans; Amy was only 7 when her mother and father died and Dan was only 4 years old.
The siblings find out, once their grandmother has died, that their family is responsible for shaping the majority of the worlds history. Each individual book chronicles one specific historical location the two main characters need to visit. The globetrotting duo are accompanied by their au pair Nellie on their quests, which adds a new dynamic to the storytelling. This then sets up the entire action filled story that is to follow in the subsequent books that came after The Maze of Bones’.
As Maze of Bones’ eases us into the plot, we discover that Dan & Amy have been given a choice of offerings from their recently deceased grandmother – a choice between a million dollars and the chance to take part in the Clue hunt, a difficult and adventurous path to power. Amy and Dan choose the Clue hunt, contending against more practiced Clue hunters. During their first quest in this adventure, they head to Paris is search for clues. Once there, they find their clue (after a bit of a struggle and some page turning moments) and this then takes them to Vienna. This sets up the entire basis of the story for the books that followed.
After Maze of Bones’, came the second entry in the series – One False Note’. This one was written by Gordon Korman and published in 2008.
This book depicts the trip the duo takes to Vienna and includes much completion from the other clue hunters, including cheating and a lot of time sensitive storytelling. This books historical person’ is Mozart, and from Vienna they are directed to Salzburg (Mozart’s birthplace). From here the siblings work out the required clue and it then sends them to the next destination of Japan.
The quick speed of the story and the interesting places that are included in each book is surely something that attracts the wide range of readers this series has.
Following on from this was The Sword Thief’, this book follows in the path of the ones before it by offering revelations and questionable alliances, so no matter the age of the reader, a page turning experience is something you will no doubt get with this set of books.
Beyond the Grave’ by Jude Watson follows The Sword Thief’ and further cements the action’ genre it has been given. Amy & Dan are now delving deeper into their family past the story reinforced the race against time the two heroes have in order to beat their seasoned rivals. This 2009 release is followed by many more books within this series, and each one was met with the same anticipation and critical praise as the last.
There is, as mentioned, more series within these novels, and the second one is called Cahills vs Vespers, and begins with a book called The Medusa Plot’. Then thereafter, there is a third series called Unstoppable’. For a ’39 Clues’ fan, there is ample reading material for them to take in.
To further document the huge success of this range of novels is the fact that there is a movie in the pipeline that will be based on this series. Not much has been unveiled about the movie, but it is listed as being in development’, so it’s been given the go ahead due to the sheer popularity of these books. Be that as it may, we can anticipate a captivating movie due to the fact that the movie will be a semblance of the sizzling drama that unravels in the books. It’s been seen as such a lucrative prospect that in 2008, Steven Spielberg consequently acquired film rights. The film will apparently still follow the outline of the story pretty tightly as it’s laid out in the book; the Cahills – being the most powerful family the world has ever had – are attempting to assemble 39 clues hidden around the world throughout the course of history. The fact that this book series already has a huge fan following all but ensures that the film will be a huge success amongst young adults and their parents alike – just like The Hunger Games before it, there is a huge potential for this book-to-film spin off to spawn a whole host of films.
As well as the news of a film in the works, the series of books has produced an ample amount of merchandise for the vast amounts of fans out there. For example, there are cards to collect, handbooks and an e-book series.
